    internet addict?

    nyceflickr

Stumbled upon netaddiction.com, an organisation which helps those seeking treatment for internet addiction. Its an interesting read considering the internet is so accessible by everyone nowadays and I literally know a handful of people who meet the criteria. I do believe that being addicted to the internet has significant consequences especially for children. Just by doing a simple google search, there are a tonne of articles on it and how it is linked to ADHD and depression in teens.

Here’s a checklist to see if you’re an addict:

    Signs of Internet Addiction

Dr. Kimberly Young has likened Internet addiction to addictive syndromes similar to impulse-control disorders on the Axis I Scale of the DSM. She developed the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) to diagnose the disorder. Meeting five of the following symptoms were considered necessary to be diagnosed.

    1. Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous online activity or anticipate next online session)?
    2. Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?
    3. Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop Internet use?
    4. Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use?
    5. Do you stay online longer than originally intended?
    6. Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet?
    7. Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet?
    8. Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?

    Other Symptoms Include:

    • Failed attempts to control behavior

    • Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities

    • Neglecting friends and family

    • Neglecting sleep to stay online

    • Being dishonest with others

    • Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior

    • Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome

    • Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities

    freedom of speech?

So I came across this article and found it a very interesting topic.
Should bloggers be more careful when stating opinions and ranting on their blogging networks? Or should freedom of speech be preserved in such situations?
Should we be restricted in what we talk about on our own little piece of cyberspace?
If we were, I think Perez Hilton would have been out of business by now… along with all the other 10 000 celebrity gossip bloggers.

Skanks of NYC’ blogger to sue Google

A NEW YORK blogger who described a model as a “skank” is planning to sue Google for $18 million after the internet giant revealed her identity.

Rosemary Port was sued by former Vogue cover girl Liskula Cohen after Google was forced to reveal her identity following a court order, The New York Daily News reports.

Ms Cohen had sought the identity of the fashion blogger so she could pursue a defamation case against her, it had earlier been revealed.

Ms Port’s offending part of the blog – which was run on Google’s blogger.com – read “I would have to say the first-place award for ‘Skankiest in NYC’ would have to go to Liskula Gentile Cohen”.
She also described Ms Cohen as an “old hag” and a “psychotic lying whore”.

Ms Port had originally defended her actions in court, claiming blogs “serve as a modern-day forum for conveying personal opinions, including invective and ranting”, and should not be treated as factual assertions, a claim rejected by the judge.

“This has become a public spectacle and a circus that is not my doing,” Ms Port said.
“By going to the press, she defamed herself.”

The 29-year-old New York fashion student now says Google didn’t do enough to protect her privacy.

“When I was being defended by attorneys for Google, I thought my right to privacy was being protected,” she told the NY Daily News.

“But that right fell through the cracks. Without any warning, I was put on a silver platter for the press to attack me.

“I would think that a multi-billion dollar conglomerate would protect the rights of all its users.”

Her suit claims Google “breached its fiduciary duty to protect her expectation of anonymity,” Ms Port’s lawyer, Salvatore Strazzullo, said.

“I’m ready to take this all the way to the Supreme Court,” Mr Strazzullo said.

“Our Founding Fathers wrote The Federalist Papers under pseudonyms. Inherent in the First Amendment is the right to speak anonymously.

“Shouldn’t that right extend to the new public square of the internet?”

Mr Strazzullo said: “Ms Cohen loves the spotlight. She brought this notoriety on herself. Then she used a PR circus to defame my client.”

But Cohen’s lawyer, Steven Wagner, hit back saying the model was never chasing media attention.

“The idea that Liskula brought this on herself is repulsive,” he said.

“If we had thought for a minute that the Google case would have brought more attention to the anonymous blogger’s site, we never would have started it.”

I was thoroughly surprised after watching CPDRC Inmates dancing to ‘Thriller’ as a tribute to MJ. Now I just came across another one of their dances to the song “Sorry Sorry” by Korean band Super Junior which I had previously posted about.

    wisdom.

In this time of preparation for finals, I’m really needing a bit of wisdom.
I really have to stop procrastinating and control the urges of wanting to buy stuff!! At the end of a day of wasting time, I say to myself “I’m gonna to do full on hard work tomorrow.”

The problem there is, I say it everyday.

    perfection.

A small incident occurred today and annoyed me a bit. I’m really not into the ‘yeah, whatever’, or ‘close enough’ attitude, especially not with the people I work with. Not paying attention to what you’re doing just makes you more likely to screw up and make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes are costly. Yes, everyone makes mistakes. But when you constantly have that attitude, and making one too many mistakes, then it really starts to get annoying. One day, the cost might be more than what you can afford. Not only that, you drag others around you down as well. No matter what it is, you must concentrate on what you’re doing and pay attention to detail. If you’re not used to that, go back and double check what you’ve done. Triple check if you’re completely unsure.

Taking this idea of perfection in another context, how much does it take for a designer to perfect their piece of art?

How far would a photographer go to get the perfect shot?
    erikjgustafson

    Or creating the perfect lie?

Perhaps we should all have something like this in our bathroom:

Doing things in a general or overview sense may be good, but knowing the fine detail will surpass mediocrity.

    Quote me.
